Red Buck Camporee

Buddy and I went from Camp Hiawatha to the Red Buck District Camporee at Pioneer Park on the Escanaba River. They had a pioneering theme plus a cake baking competition. Good Event. We were invited to eat with Troop 411. They had stroganoff. Buddy had the leftovers to include licking out the Dutch Oven (a missed Kodak moment).

Spring at Camp Hiawatha

Buddy and I made our first trip of the year to Camp Hiawatha. Everything survived the winter including the Gilwell Oak seedling (see October 2008 post). The shower house looks good and everything is on track for it to be ready for camp.
Pere Marquette District was conducting Outdoor Leader Training and the camp committee was at work planting trees and rooting out site 8.

High Flying Eagle

Otha Thornton was on the ROTC staff at Michigan Tech from 1999 to 2000 and was the Copper Country Day Camp chair for two summers. He was an Eagle Scout and his son was in Cub Scouts at the time. He went on to a tour in Germany and then to Fort Belvoir. His current assignment is as Presidential Communications officer meaning he coordinated appearences by the president. His next assignment is in Iraq helping coordinate the withdrawal.
He is the commencement speaker at Tech this weekend. We invited him to the Round Table Thursday and he spoke with the Scouts and leaders. Here he greets Zach.
