It was a privilege to be present as Don and Paddy Fitch were honored by friends and colleagues as Don received the Physician of the Year Award from the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians. Speaker after speaker referred not only to Don's long involvement in Boy Scouts but also how he exemplifies the principles of Scouting in his life.

Dedication of Memorial Tree for Garrett "Gary" Lee

Garrett "Gary" Lee was an Eagle Scout from Troop 510 in Kingsford, MI. He went on to Northern Michigan University where he became president of Iota Chi Chapter of the national service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega which was founded on the principles of the Boy Scouts. After graduating, he moved to Chicago where he began his career. He was drafted in to the Army and sent to Vietnam with the First Cavalry. He was killed in action in the Battle of Ia Drang on November 17, 1965.

This is Gary's Court of Honor with Scoutmaster Floyd Schultz on the right of the Scouts.

Gary's APO brothers felt there should be a memorial on campus to Gary to remind future generations of his valor, sacrifice, and service. The NMU foundation has recently began a memorial tree program. Through a major contribution from Chapter 380 of the Vietnam Veterans of America and other gifts from APO members, Scouters, and friends of the family, the memorial became a reality. It was dedicated on June 25, 2011.

The most recent Eagle Scout from Troop 510, Richard Louys III, learned of Gary's youth from his relatives and related stories of Gary's sense of adventure and bravery.

Larry Collister, who earned his Eagle Award in Pennsylvania, commanded the color guard for the VVA. He presented a letter from Lt Gen (ret) Hal Moore to Gary's sister, Carol Gayan, and brother, Don Lee. Gen Moore commanded the 1-7th Cavalry in the Battle of Ia Drang and authored the book, "We Were Soldiers Once...and Young." The book was subsequently made into the movie of the same name. Veteran Scouter Marvin Gibson represented the Council.

Larry Collister eloquently spoke on behalf of the veterans.

Al Salmi, an Eagle Scout from Rock, APO brother of Gary, and ride captain for the Patriot Guard Riders was the primary initiator of the memorial. He spoke movingly of the purpose of the Patriot Guard and conveyed condolances to the family.

A good Scouting friend, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jim Simmons, is now stationed on the Coast Guard ice breaker Mackinaw. He was stationed at the Soo about 10 years ago and was District Commissioner in Chippewa District and on the Wood Badge staff. The Mackinaw was moored in Marquette for the weekend of the 4th. Marv and Lois Gibson and I were given a tour of the boat by Jim.

Eagles all around the UP

There were Eagle Courts of Honor all across the UP this weekend. I was able to attend Rudy Mosca's presentation in the Soo with Troop 105. It was memorable with red-lipped Rudy spewing a few puns. Rudy's mentor was Scoutmaster Stan Newill. Then on Sunday in Hessel, Patrick Duman, Charlie McConkey, and Brent Heerspink became the last of Dale Streichert's 33 Eagle Scouts.

Here is Strike with other of his Eagles who were present and presented him with a plaque listing all 33 of the Eagles earned during his tenure. Patrick's mentor was his dad who has two other Eagle Scout sons. Brent also chose his dad who had been Webelos leader for the Scouts. Charlie's mentor was his grandfather, Tony Autore, who originally brought Scouting to Cedarville.

Robbie Burrows' ceremony was in Ontonagon with Troop 209.

TJ Haferkorn of Troop 532 in Norway also had a presentation on Saturday.

Jordan Smith of Troop 360 had his Court of Honor on Sunday in Marquette. This presentation was unique in that his Eagle Scout grandfather from Ohio was able to participate by interactive television. Jordan formerly was in Troop 305 and is the last Scout who was in that troop to earn his Eagle.

Auriel Van Der Laar instructs Webelos on the Naturalist Activity Badge at MTU's Ford Center at Alberta. Fifty Webelos were present and each district in the council was represented. Thanks to Auriel and the other Tech students for a great program.

The Venturer Seminar at Camp Hiawatha created some good fellowship and lessons learned.

Also at Camp, the Properties Committee was hard at work putting chips around the newly planted trees in site 8.

It was a great day at Camp Hiawatha as 61 Bobcats were introduced to Cub Scouting. Thanks to event Chairman Jennie Lochner, Iota Chi Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, Scoutmaster Paul Salfai and Troop 360, Dick Oslund, John Kenn, Jim Edwards, Sally and Erik Hendricks, Chuck Suckow, Travis Wooley, Dan Closner, and Mike Alberts for starting these boys and their families on the Scouting trail. The Cubs learned the legends of the Jungle Book from Baloo and were introduced to the Cub Scout Promise, Law of the Pack, and Motto.

Matt Waters is shown with Scoutmaster Curtis Jay at his Court of Honor. Matt is on the football team at Michigan Tech with a great record of accomplishment in athletics, vocal music, and student government. He perservered to earn his Eagle in spite of challenges with his mother's health. His mother died 3 weeks before this Court of Honor, but she left a son of which to be very proud.
Curtis received his 4 Eagle Mentor pin. He is to be saluted for laboring to continuing a Troop after its feeder pack dried up.

The Leader's Leader- Dr. Don Fitch

Council President Don Miller presents Dr. Don Fitch of Troop 411 with the certificate as the Hiawathaland Council's Hall of Leadership recipient. The Hall of Leadership is a project of the 100th Anniversary Committee to recognize outstanding leaders in Scouting. Nationally, over 7000 leaders were nominated. In the Hiawathaland Council, there were 17 nominees of which 12 were selected for national competition. Dr. Fitch was one of 300 selected nationally.

Don began as a Scout leader with Troop 411 of Escanaba in the early 1970s and has continued serving since then. Over 40 young men earned the Eagle Award under his leadership including his 3 sons. He had been very involved in Woodbadge training, Philmont treks, and the Mackinac Island Scout Service Troop. He is an exemplary Scouter in every way.

Farewell to Joe & Sue Erickson

Joe Erickson's retirement from professional Scouting was marked by an outpouring of appreciation, respect, and love for a couple who have contributed decades of service to young people in Scouting and especially the campers and staff at Camp Hiawatha. At a reception in the Snowshoe Lodge, Joe and Sue heard accolades from scores of friends in the crammed building.

Although Joe is retiring from full-time Scouting, he will continue to be involved in Scouting and making improvements at Camp Hiawatha.

Mackinac Island Board of Review

Mackinac Island Scout Service Camp

Every week a troop of Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts from Michigan serve as the Mackinac Island Scout Service Troop. Our council's 56 Scouts are coordinated by Troop 411 led by Scoutmaster Craig Woerpel and 11 other adults. The troop stays in the Scout Barracks behind the fort. Its primary duties are raising and lowering the 21 flags in the vicinity of the fort and acting as guides at the fort and other historical locations. The Scouts also have a lot of activities when not on duty including bicycling around the island, baseball, frisbee, shopping, pie eating contest, merit badge opportunities, and service projects.

Farewell for now, Schlak

Schlak has been one of the ubiquitous personalities of the Hiawathaland Council for over 17 years. He is relocating back to his hometown of Flint to help care for his parents.

He has been Scoutmaster for Troop 356 that entire time, Crew leader for 356 since its inception, summer camp staff, JLT Scoutmaster, National Jamboree staff, active OA leader, district commissioner, district training chairman, golf committee member, and the council registrar the last 4 years.

The troop and crew held a farewell last week. There I commented that he was a Scouter for all seasons...but always in shorts. Shirley Kriegel has composed lyrics for the occasion using the music from the 60's song, "To Sir, With Love." A memorable line was, "How do you tell your parents that your Scoutmaster wears a pony tail?" That pretty wells sums up Schlak, an unconventional Scouting traditionalist who was loved by a generation of Scouts and their parents
for helping them to adulthood.

My camera out-smarted me at the Jamboree and I just got the pictures of the departure from the First United Methodist Church in Marquette where Boy Scouting started in the Upper Peninsula and the Michigan Tech exhibit in the Technology Quest area. However, there are many posted at www.bsajamboree.org/DailyPhotos.aspx. Our Scouts had a great time at the Jamboree and conducted themselves well.

The Grand Boy Scout Anniversary Parade

A highlight of the 100th Anniversary was the Grand Boy Scout Parade on Constitution Avenue in Washington, DC with 10,000 Scouts and leaders marching in the 100 degree heat. Our Jamboree Troops had a great view of the parade. In the picture below taken from the top of the Washington Monument, our troops were under the tree at the left of the picture with a clear view of the White House as the backdrop for the parade.

We had both the Boy Scout Area Visitation Team and the State of Michigan inspection on the first full day of camp. Camp Hiawatha met all the applicable standards for the BSA camp visitation and was in full compliance with the regulations of the Department of Human Services. Congratulations to Camp Director Joe Erickson, Program Director Sam Ledabuhr, and Assistant Camp Director Mike Alberts and the entire staff. Youth leaders for the Superior Corps program, Shane Poisson, Conor Parker, and Chris LaMarche told about the conservation projects done in conjunction with the Forest Service. Superior Corps was modeled after the National Order of the Arrow's ArrowCorps program two years ago. Ag Im Lodge's first effort involved 18 youth and 4 adults. The Forest Service lauded their efforts.

Bill Jamerson entertained the Jamboree Scouts and the Superior Corps participants with his songs and stories about lumberjacks and the CCC boys.

Gilwell Lives

You may be aware that two years ago, an Eagle Scout Alumnus of the Troop 305, Dr. Ron Reynolds sent us two seedlings sprouted from acorns of the famous Gilwell oak beneath which Baden Powell taught his original Boy Scouts. (see posting from Oct 2008) One was planted at the Service Center and did not survive the first winter. This one is planted in the Scoutcraft area at Camp Hiawatha. It did not look healthy when we uncovered it this spring and I feared it too was a goner. But today, I was elated to see it flourishing as it expressed its joy at being part of the BSA's 100th Anniversary.

New Eagles in Houghton

There were new Eagles in flight in Houghton. Eric Lufkin of Troop 208 will have his Eagle Court of Honor next Sunday, but he assisted in the Court for Luke Doskey, Corey Mullins, Caleb Carr, and Ben Jaszczak of Varsity Team 208. Luke moved to the area recently from northeast Illinois and had done his advancement there, but joined the crew for the Court of Honor. As seen in the top picture, the Scouts have fun together. Earlier in the day, they had all completed the new Scuba merit badge with a dive in Lake Superior.

Scouts gained

an understanding and appreciation of the founders of Scouting in the UP through hiking in their footsteps. Jim Beckman portrayed Perry Hatch, the founder of Scouting in the UP who became Scouting's Grand Old Man here. Jim shared his personal recollections of Perry and memorabilia from his extensive collections.

Jordan Smith related the story of Bart King was one of the original Scouts and then a leader. He served herocally in World War I where he died of pneumonia brought on by exhaustion.

Saturday morning, 250 Scouts and leaders in 40 patrols on 5 trails in the Sugarloaf, Little Presque Isle, Harlow Lake, Hogsback Mountain area hiked for 2 hours in beautiful weather.

Thom LaLonde had a station where they learned about GPS and geocaching. It worked. No one got lost, but some patrols explored alternate trails.

As they hiked, Scouts got glimpses of the some of the influences that shape the UP. Walt Summers entertainingly portrayed a French trader and displayed the wares of Europe that were traded for fur pelts.

Skip Jones told and sang of the maritime history of the Great Lakes from the voyaguer canoe to the Lake frieghers of today.

Father Ben Hasse related the impact of the religious leaders like Father Marquette and Bishop Baraga.

Centennial Celebration- Cub Scouts in Mattson Park

Cub Scouts had a great day with the tours of the Marquette Light House and Marquette Historical Museum in addition to the crafts and games in Mattson Park plus the demonstrations by the Coast Guard, Sheriff's Department, Chocolay Fire Department, DNRE, and others. It was a long day full of fun for the Cubs.

Venturing Leadership Awards

Ruth Watry, Council Venture Chair, presented the Adult Venture Leadership Award to James Schlak and the Youth Venture Leadership Award to Bruce Olson, both of Crew 356 in Skandia.

Schlak has been instrumental in furthering the Venturing program since it's inception in 1998. Olson has been vice president of program and of administration in his crew while also being an officer at the chapter and lodge levels in the Order of the Arrow, serving as a youth member of the Hiawathaland Council Executive Board, and completing his Venture Silver Award.

Ji-Hoon grows to Eagle

Ji-Hoon Min of Troop 356 in Skandia recently received his Eagle Scout Award. He is with his Eagle Mentor, Barb Dupras.

I first became acquainted with Ji-Hoon in 2004 when he received the Certificate of Merit for using the Heimlich Maneuver to rescue a fellow student choking on a hot dog during lunch at school. Little Ji-Hoon is shown with Nathan Bennett who had taught Ji-Hoon the Heimlich at a troop meeting shortly before the incident.

Annual Meeting

We had a great Annual Meeting. Don Miller and Al Feldhauser were honored with the Silver Beaver Award. Scott Parker was unable to be present due to his daughter's illness.

We were honored to have Curley Verville with us to help with the Eagle Scout recognition. Ten of the 45 Eagles in the Class of 09-10 were able to be with us. Curley has completed 78 years of Scouting and only missed one annual meeting since 1945.

I am glad to be able to continue serving with Don as Council President and Barb Dupras as Council Commissioner.

More Blue and Golds

I am in need of a new camera, which we should get this week, so the pictures below were sent to me. If you have B&G or Court of Honor pictures you would like posted, sent them to me.

Pack 361 had a great Blue and Gold highlighted by the gradutation of 3 Webelos each of whom received a handcrafted arrow decorated to symbolize his accomplishments in Cub Scouts.

Pack 346 had memorable skits. The Tigers appeared as tottering old men. When asked what was the matter, they responded, "What do you expect, Scouts are 100 years old!"

Pack 219 had a fun B&G at the bowling alley in Lanse. They graduated thier first Arrow of Light recipient since the pack was reorganized two years ago.

Anniversary Party for Pack, Troop, and Crew 370

The whole Scout family, Cubs, Boy Scouts, and Ventures along with family and alumni celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Scouting at the Latter Day Saints Church in Harvey with a Blue and Gold Banquet and Pinewood Derby Race. The older Scouts produced a DVD in which Scout alumni in the church shared their memories of Scouting in their youth. Whitney and Martha Johnson were recognized as the Marquette Ward Scout parents of the century for their commitment to Scouting and for being the parents of 9 Eagle Scout sons.

Webelos WOW

Pack 209 in Ontonagon had a great Blue and Gold Banquet highlighted by the graduation of 5 Webelos Scouts. Each of the Scouts earned all 20 of the Webelos Activity badges. WOW! Each was presented an arrow decorated to symbolize his journey through Cub Scouts and mounted on a board they made himself as a project for craftsman!

Report to the State House

The 10 Boy Scout Councils in Michigan were present for the Report to the State House. The program was coordinated by Senator Jason Allen (pictured with Nick, Harrry, and Conor) and Minority Leader Kevin Elsenheimer, both Eagle Scouts. Representatives Fred Miller, Jeff Mayes, adn James Bolger, also all Eagles, were among those on the committee that interviewed the Scouts in committee hearings.

Scouts were present as a Resolution recognizing the 100th Anniversary of the BSA. The other picture shows Venture Scout Corky Wilson greeting Representatives after the resolution was passed.

Wyatt's a Winner!

Wyatt from Pack 130 in Newberry is an all around winner. He was the top Cub Scout Trails End Popcorn Salesman in Chippewa District and earned the family getaway overnight at the Holiday Inn Express in Sault Ste Marie. He also submitted a joke to Boys Life that was selected for publication. Way to go, Wyatt!

Farewell Denise

Over 60 of Denise Dawydko's Scouting friends gathered to wish her well as she retired after 25 years of sevice to youth. Scouters across the Upper Peninsula from Pickford to Ontonagon and Calumet to Iron Mountain to Escanaba gathered at the First Methodist Church in Marquette to show their appreciation for her enthusiastic and cheerful service and friendship. She received tributes that expressed that she was much more than the Trading Post manager, she was a mentor, a cheerleader, a comforter, and a friend to all she talked with.

Denise was presented with a charm bracelet and many other mementos.

Thanks to Barb Dupras and the Mighty, Mighty Hiawathaland Women who planned and put on the event.

New Eagles in Harvey

James Shearer, Joseph Compton, and Bridger Cherry were happy and proud to see their names added to the Eagle Scout plaque for Troop 370 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Harvey. James's project was collection of eye glasses in support of the Lions Club's program of eye glass distribution to needy people. James constructed a trail and handicapped campsite at the Chocolay Township marina. Bridger's project was rebuilding a dock at the same location.

Youth Citizen- Jordan Smith

The Marquette Rotary Club annually recognizes a Youth Citizen along with other community leaders. It was a privilege for me to make the presentation to Jordan Smith, a Life Scout who is 2 merit badges away from Eagle and the Senior Patrop Leader for Troop 360. In addition to his Scouting, he is an outstanding student and musician. He is the coach for a middle school Lego Robotics team that advanced to the state competition and a volunteer at his church.

I have not been posting much because I keep forgetting my camera, not because there have not been things happening. The OA Winter Conference at Rapid River was a good time to visit with the OA brotherhood. Chris LaMarche of Troop 473 in Gladstone had an impressive Court of Honor this month in the beatiful sanctuary of Memorial United Methodist Church.

Another successful popcorn sale. Volunteers from Troop 302 sort the product at Car Quest in Marquette. About $330,000 of popcorn was sold by 1,100 Scouts across the UP.
